Obstacles, successes, and a recipe

Since starting my business I’ve been trying to spread the word about my services and wonder if people feel at a loss about whether they want to try essential oils.  Many people don’t know that they have so many benefits beyond just smelling nice!

Hesitations…Obstacles…

Cost can be a big factor, but there are so many essential oils that are in the range of $10 to $20 for a 15 mL bottle, and a little goes a long way.  Similar to the cost of going out for tea and pastries, or a nice lunch, but the essential oils are going to last much longer and give you multiple benefits!

No time to research? That’s where I come in! One of the services I offer is a free consultation where I will recommend (and even give you a sample) an essential oil or two for a main concern you might want to address (and teach you how to use it).

Worried about misinformation? That’s a big issue these days.  There is so much information out there posted by people of all experience and education levels, so you want to make sure that you are getting good information.  On my resources page, you’ll find some sources of information that I have researched and trust. There are blogs, free webinars, and podcasts to suit any learning style, and for those whose learning style prefers face-to-face experiential education, I offer classes for small groups or individuals.

Lack of personal (or positive) experience? Maybe you’ve tried essential oils and it just didn’t help with what you were trying them for – There can be some trial and error because not all essential oils work the same for everyone.  Lavender might help some people calm down for better sleep, but other people might feel too energized to sleep after trying lavender essential oil. Everyone is different, but there is hope, because there are many essential oils that can help with the same issue.  Maybe you had a reaction because you didn’t know the safety considerations.  Learning from the right resource can help you learn what to do differently and move forward with greater confidence, if you’re open to giving it another try.  I’ve made mistakes in my use of essential oils before I discovered Aromahead Institute.  One time, I put oregano essential oil in a footbath and got a very uncomfortable burn on my ankle because I did not dilute it sufficiently (I didn’t dilute it at all!!! Lesson learned!)

Skeptical? I was too, for a long time! I thought “How can essential oils help me, other than just smelling good?” Of course, some people are happy just using essential oils for making their home, car, or themselves smell good, and I use them for that too.

and for so much more…

There is science behind aromatherapy.  There is evidence. Hundreds of research articles demonstrating positive results of essential oils and individually studied essential oil components (a keyword search on pubmed.gov is a good starting place to find some of these articles).  There are also the experiences of hundreds of established, educated aromatherapists who have been in the field and are teaching and writing.

I have personally used essential oils successfully (with the appropriate carriers to dilute them) to…

Reduce pain and tension (example: Wild Orange)

Calm my mind and body so I can sleep better (Lavender)

Discourage insects from coming into the house or landing on me if I’m outdoors (Lemongrass)

Address temporary skin issues (Tea Tree)

Help me feel more alert (for driving or work!) (Peppermint)

Calm my mind during dental procedures (Wild Orange)

Make an uplifting body wash for showers  (Douglas Fir)

Tame frizzy hair (Rosemary)

Discourage toenail fungus (Tea Tree)

After sun care (Lavender)

Soothe digestive discomfort (Peppermint)

Calm ‘head tension’ (Palo Santo)

Address bruises or acute injuries (Helichrysum)

Support my immune system (Wild Orange)

Address sinus congestion (Eucalyptus)

Alleviate fatigue (Rosemary)

One of my most successful blends was made for a friend who had acute, painful cramping.  The essential oils I used are calming to pain, muscle spasms, and to the emotions, and she has been able to manage these monthly occurrences much better.  I’m going to share it with you.

1 part Wild Orange (Citrus sinensis) essential oil

1 part Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea) essential oil

1 part Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia) essential oil

Add to your favorite carrier such as jojoba, avocado, or olive oil.  You can make a “stock” blend of just the essential oils in a separate bottle to keep on hand and add it to a carrier when you need it.  Start with less, such as 4 drops in 10mL (1/3 ounce) of carrier, and gradually add more essential oil if that amount does not provide the desired effect. An unscented lotion will give you faster absorption and a thicker vegetable/plant oil will provide a slower absorption over a longer period of time.

For kids under 5 years old, elderly people, pregnant women (see the May 12 event information for essential oil use and safety recommendations for pregnant or nursing women), or if you have a significant medical challenge, reduce the amount of essential oil to 2 drops per 1/3 oz, or 6 drops per oz of carrier.

  1. Jennifer’s research and recommendations were spot on. I relied on essemtial oils to calm my stress, relax me to sleep and help me adjust to time zone changes for long-term travel this spring. There is a reason these oils are called essential.
